About the National Health Insurance scheme

Health insurance schemes provide partial or total coverage for medical expenses incurred in the course of examinations and treatment at medical institutions.
In Japan, there are the following health insurance schemes: "employee health insurance," which people sign up for through their workplace; the "Advanced Elderly Medical Service System," which people aged seventy-five and over sign up for; and "National Health Insurance," which everyone else signs up for.
In this case, "everyone else" refers to people who are not signed up for another health insurance scheme, which includes self-employed people, those working in the agricultural sector, retirees, etc.
If you are not signed up for employee health insurance through your workplace, the "Advanced Elderly Medical Service System," or receiving public assistance, please make sure to sign up for National Health Insurance at the municipality in which you live.
*Please inquire at your workplace for more information on employee health insurance. Please click the link for more information on the "Advanced Elderly Medical Service System".
*Non-Japanese residents are also required to sign up for health insurance if staying in Japan for more than 3 months.
*Leaflets in English, Chinese, Korean, Spanish and Portuguese are available at ward offices.
